Ah, I love Asheville! It's only an hour away from me (via scenic, uncrowded I-26), so it's where I go if I'm craving good restaurants, funky shopping, and a decent yet navigable downtown. And Biltmore, of course, is a hoot to wander through (though it must be utterly mobbed this time of year).
And hello, Andrew. Wow, you're lucky to live so close to Asheville! I'd love to go back someday and spend more time wandering the downtown area. The city has some terrific architecture. A springtime visit would be nice--I could actually enjoy all those sidewalk cafés. But I liked walking around and taking photos.
My biggest highlight would probably be the Biltmore, which was pretty crowded but was lovely in all its Christmas décor. I'd love to see it in spring, as well. I know the gardens must be amazing.
Have you ever seen the Basilica of St. Lawrence? It's a gorgeous structure.
The most exciting highlight was tripping getting out of the car at an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Yikes. I don't think that particular one had any fence, though I'm sure all those trees would have broken my fall at some point. Heh - I wasn't right at the edge, thankfully, but it was still quite a moment.
I also enjoyed the community of Black Mountain--fun little cafés and shops there as well, and everyone there was so friendly.
Oh, I also went to see the Grove Park Inn--just to see the original structure, which opened in 1913. It was fun to look at the gallery of all the famous folks who'd stayed there, and the view from the huge porch was very impressive.
Hmm, I've not made it to Black Mountain or the Grove Park Inn yet. It sounds like I need to add them to my list of places to see.
The Basilica is indeed lovely - I once spent part of a serene afternoon there, gazing at its interior, before heading to the Orange Peel (a splendid concert venue) in the evening.

Why didn't you stop by the headquarters of Ingles groceries? My first job. The Ashville store is supposed to be crazy big.
I think I passed the headquarters, actually. And there were Ingles stores everywhere. First time I'd ever seen one.

Care to share any highlights from your vacation?
Cheers,

Beautiful photos, Diane!
Thanks, Mark.
